Child Support

Each parent has a responsibility to financially support their child(ren). Ordinarily, the obligation to pay support ends when the child reaches the age of 18, marries, is emancipated, joins the armed forces, or passes away. However, there are certain circumstances where child support extends beyond the age of 18, such as if a child turns 18 during their senior year of high school and is expected to graduate before they turn 19, or if a child is determined to be a dependent adult due to a mental or physical incapacity which began prior to the child reaching 18.

Some issues concerning child support that need to be considered include but are not limited to the amount of support, method of payments, methods to ensure payments are made, if and/or when child support may be increased, decreased or terminated, and which parent claims the dependency deduction for tax purposes.
